Quit India Movement-Revision Capsule-

 🡆  conceived at CWC meeting at Wardha -July 14,1942

Reasons for struggle-

       1.Failure of Cripps mission

       2.Public discontent against wartime hardships

      3.Feeling on imminent British collapse

      4.Preparation of masses for Japanese invasion

      5.Racist treatment with Indians during British evacuation from South East Asia                                                                                           

* AICC meeting at Gowalia Tank,Bombay-8 aug,1942– Ratification of Quit India Resolution

5 resolutions were passed-

                    1. Immediate end to British rule

                    2. Commitment of free India to defend itself against fascist forces

                    3. Provisional govt in India post British withdrawal

                    4. civil disobedience movement against India

                    5. Gandhi-leader of struggle

* Gave the slogan- “Do or Die”

* 9 August- Top leadership was arrested

Underground Activists-

* Rammanohar Lohia,Jayaprakash Narayana,Achyut Patwardhana,Sucheta Kriplani, R P Goenka,Aruna Asaf Ali,Usha Sharma,Biju Patnaik,Chhotubhai Puranik

*  Usha Sharma– underground radio activity in Bombay

Parallel Governments

1.Ballia- Chittu Pandey

2.Tamluk,Midnapore- by Satish Samant

                      -Bidyut bahinis were organised here,

                       -cyclone relief work,grants to schools etc

3.Satara-  “Prati Sarkar” was organised by  Y B Chavan,Nana Patil etc

                  -Nyayadan Mandals were organised

                   -Prohibition Campaigns

                    -Gandhi Marriages

Participants-

 🡆  Youth, students, women, workers, peasants, Govt officials, some communists

 🡆  February 1943– Gandhi’s fast unto death

IMPORTANT POINTS

 🡆 Movement was most intense in Eastern UP and Bihar.

🡆 Underground activity was undertaken by Socialists, Forward Bloc       Members, Gandhi ashramites, revolutionary terrorists and local organisations.

 🡆 No communal clashes during the movement.

 🡆 Even some zamindars participated.

 🡆 Princely states showed low key response.

 🡆 Martial law was not applied but repression was severe.

 🡆 Element of spontaneity was higher in this movement.

 🡆 The great significance was that the movement put the demand for Independence on the immediate agenda.
