Narasinghapettai nagaswaram

  • Nagaswaram made in Narasinghapettai in Thanjavur district has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

  • Narasinghapettai, a village near Thiruvidaimarudur, has an inseparable place in the world of Carnatic music. Here live the families of artisans who excel in making the nagaswaram. It was N.G.N. Ranganatha Achari, who designed the ‘pari’ nagaswaram, now used by nagaswaram players, at the request of nagaswaram wizard Thiruvavaduthurai T.N. Rajarathinam Pillai.
  • Nagaswaram is made of ‘acha maram’, a tree known for its sturdy features. Nagaswaram makers of Narasinghapettai buy old wooden pillars from the dismantled houses.

  • Kashmiri hand-woven carpets were a huge craze with a big market for exports but soon its market space was seen to be occupied by Iranian carpets or machine-made carpets. With the new GI tags, buyers will be able to distinguish between the real hand-woven ones and the loom products.

Red oranges from Tamenglong-Manipur

  • Tamenglong Orange/ Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is a unique crop that is only found in Tamenglong district, Manipur. The plant is a perennial evergreen of the Rutaceae family and subtropical in distribution.

Sirarakhing Chili- Manipur

  • The Sirarakhong village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district celebrates Hathei Phanit festival, dedicated to their indigenous, organically-grown Sirarakhong chili.

  • The Sirarakhong Hathei chili has become one of the most sought-after chilies of Manipur. It is organically grown in the hills surrounding Sirarakhong village in Ukhrul.

  • The Sirarakhong Hathei chili is rich in calcium in addition to having high vitamin C content. It is also a great source of nutrients and antioxidants.

Kanniyakumari Clove

  • Grown in the densely wooded areas of Western Ghats, it is known for its rich aromatic oil content.

  • With the highest percentage of volatile oil content present in the clove buds, the crop being grown in the district is much sought-after. The ‘sea mist’ also helps with eugenol. The eugenol acetate content in the oil is higher, lending better aroma and flavour to the clove buds.
  • Of the total production of 1,100 tonnes of cloves in India, Tamil Nadu accounts for close to 1,000 tonnes, of which over 65% is grown in the Kanniyakumari district.

Edayur chilli – Kerala

  • Edayur chilli is a unique cultivar of this area with very low pungency. The distinctiveness can be attributed to its genetic makeup, the specific environmental and soil conditions of the area and the traditional methods of cultivation.

Kuttiattoor mango-Kannur, Kerala

  • It is a popular and tasty traditional mango cultivar of Kuttiattoor and the nearby gram panchayats of Kannur district. 
  • This mango is famous for its appealing orange-yellow colour in addition to its excellent taste and flavour. The ripened fruits do not show speckles or patches on the skin, making it more appealing in the market. The distinctiveness of Kuttiattoor mango is aided by the combination of specific environmental conditions of the area of its cultivation and varietal characters.

  • Channapatna toys are special wooden toys and dolls manufactured in Channapatna town popularly known as “Gombegala Ooru” (Toy Town) in Ramanagara district of Karnataka

Chamba Chappal and Lahauli hand-knitten woollen socks and gloves- Himachal Pradesh

  • The renowned ‘Chamba Chappal’, Himachal Pradesh’s indigenous slipper handcrafted from pure leather and popular across the country, has finally been granted the Geographical Indication or GI tag. The special type of slippers have a royal heritage dating back to the erstwhile rulers of Chamba.

  • Apart from the slippers,  the hill state’s famous Lahauli hand-knitted woollen socks and gloves have also got the GI tag.

Mithila Makhana/Fox-nuts

  • The Geographical Indications Registry (GIR) under the Central ministry of commerce has accepted the plea to rename Bihar Makhana as Mithila Makhana.

Assam’s rice wine Judima gets GI tag

  • The Dimasa community prepares the beverage from rice and a certain herb.

Sojat Mehndi of Rajasthan

  • Known for its entrancing, deep burnt-red stain.

Following items are seeking GI Tags-

Apatani Textiles

  • The Apatani weave comes from the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh living at Ziro, the headquarters of lower Subansiri district. The woven fabric of this tribe is known for its geometric and zigzag patterns and also for its angular designs.
  • Ziro is also famous for its unique rice cultivation.

Gula

  • A unique white brinjal, gula — once a delicacy but less grown now — has caught Goa State Biodiversity Board’s (GSBB) at attention for conservation and geographical indication (GI) tagging.

Groundnut from Cheyvur

  • The crunchy Kovilpatti kadalai mittai, Groundnut candy made in the villages of Thoothukudi, has got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, but the ingredient that makes it special, DMV-7 variety of groundnut cultivated in Tiruppur’s Cheyvur village, is yet to get any recognition.

  • The Cheyvur variety is considered the groundnut in Western Tamil Nadu. 

Woraiyur cotton saree

  • An application has been filed seeking the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Woraiyur cotton saree.
  • It is recognised for its block colour schemes and geometric motifs. It has a simple, narrow border with plain or small motifs.
  • The saree is traditionally produced by the ‘korvai loom’, an attachment that creates a ‘korvai’ (continuous) border while weaving the body of the garment, in a single process. More than 500 handlooms out of 1,000 households in Manamedu village near Tiruchy now make the sarees.

Atreyapuram Putharekulu

  • The famous Andhra dessert Atreyapuram Putharekulu has gone for pre-examination for the geographical indication (GI) tag at the registry in Chennai.

Kashmir Willow

  • Salix Alba varcaerulea-  used for manufacture of cricket bat may get GI tag soon.

Panruti cashews- Tamil Nadu

  • Panruti cashews are unique in nature because of the taste and quality.

Marthandam Honey

  • The method of processing this specific honey is unique as it is extracted from the hives and stored in wax coated drums for over 4-9 months which helps in changing the density of the honey as well as removing all the dirt and impurities naturally.

  • This honey is different also because the bees procure nectar from the wild flowers from the forest area nearby and from the rubber estates.
