What Are Local & Regional Winds?
Above the surface, the great planetary winds — the trades, westerlies and polar easterlies — set the global pattern. But close to the ground, mountains, deserts, coasts and passing weather systems create their own local winds: named, seasonal air-streams that dominate the weather of one region. A single valley can have a wind so distinctive that it earns its own name, its own reputation, and even its own folklore. Geographers usually sort them into three families — hot, cold and warm foehn-type winds.
The Foehn Effect — Why Some Descending Winds Warm
The foehn-type winds (Chinook, Foehn, Zonda, Nor’wester, Berg) share one mechanism. As air is forced up the windward side of a mountain it cools and drops its moisture as rain or snow. Having lost that moisture, it pours down the leeward side and warms rapidly by compression — so it arrives hot, very dry, and able to melt snow astonishingly fast. That is why the Chinook is nicknamed the “snow-eater”. Hot desert winds work differently: they are simply blowing off vast, sun-baked deserts.

India’s Local Winds
India’s best-known local wind is the Loo — the searing, dry westerly that grips the northern plains in May and June and can be deadly in the afternoon heat. Two other regional winds appear in exams: the Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester), violent pre-monsoon evening thunderstorm-squalls over Bengal and Assam (locally the “calamity of Baisakh”), and the Mango showers and Elephanta — pre-monsoon and monsoon-onset showers along the south and west coasts. These fit into the wider pattern of India’s monsoon climate rather than the desert or mountain winds elsewhere on the map.
