The Dopamine Architecture of Social Media
Social media platforms were not accidentally addictive. They were deliberately engineered using principles from behavioural psychology and neuroscience to maximise time-on-platform — because engagement is the product.
Sean Parker, founding president of Facebook, in 2017: “How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?… It’s a social-validation feedback loop… exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology.” Former VP Chamath Palihapitiya: “The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we’ve created are destroying how society works.”
Dopamine and Social Validation
The nucleus accumbens — the brain’s primary reward centre — releases dopamine in anticipation of, and in response to, social approval. Receiving likes, comments, or shares activates the same neural circuits as food, sex, and drugs. This is not hyperbole: neuroimaging studies (Meshi et al., 2015; Sherman et al., 2016) show consistent ventral striatum activation when adolescents receive social media validation.
Dopamine peaks are greatest in anticipation, not receipt, of the reward (Schultz, 1997). This explains why checking a phone every few minutes generates its own reward cycle even when notifications are empty. The act of checking is the dopamine hit — not the content found.
FOMO — Fear of Missing Out
FOMO was first studied by Przybylski et al. (2013) as “a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent.” Social media makes FOMO chronic: the curated highlight reels of others’ social lives are constantly visible, and the asymmetry is structural — people post their best moments, not their ordinary ones.
Sleep Disruption
Social media disrupts sleep through three mechanisms: (1) Blue light suppression of melatonin from screens used at night; (2) Psychological arousal from emotionally engaging content activating the sympathetic nervous system; (3) Notification interruption of sleep architecture. Levenson et al. (2017) found that adolescents who checked social media during the night had significantly more disturbed sleep and higher depression rates.
Sleep deprivation increases emotional reactivity and reduces executive function — making people more susceptible to social comparison, more emotionally vulnerable to negative content, and less able to regulate their social media use. Sleep disruption and social media over-use feed each other in a self-reinforcing cycle remarkably similar to Cacioppo’s loneliness loop.

Self, Identity & the Curated Self
Social media has transformed how people perform identity, evaluate themselves, and form self-concept. The consequences for self-esteem, body image, and authentic selfhood are profound.
The structural asymmetry of social media is psychologically critical: people share their best moments (holidays, achievements, relationships, physical appearance) but experience the full spectrum of their lives — including boredom, failure, loneliness, and self-doubt. When comparing to others’ feeds, individuals systematically underestimate the ordinariness of others’ lives and overestimate their happiness. Filter Bubbles, Echo Chambers & Radicalisation
Algorithmic personalisation and human psychology interact to create information environments where people primarily encounter content that confirms existing beliefs — with profound consequences for democracy, science, and social cohesion.
Guess et al. (2023) and Nyhan et al. (2023) published large-scale Facebook experiments in Science and Nature finding that reducing algorithmic content had smaller effects on polarisation than expected. This suggests human selective exposure (people choosing confirming content) may matter more than algorithmic filtering. The debate continues — but both mechanisms likely operate together.

Haidt & colleagues argue the evidence is overwhelming that smartphones and social media caused the post-2012 teen mental health crisis, especially for girls, and that the effect sizes are large enough to warrant urgent policy action. Orben & Przybylski counter that when analysed rigorously, effect sizes are small (comparable to eating potatoes or wearing glasses) and correlations do not establish causation. This is one of psychology’s most active methodological debates — both positions must be understood for critical analysis.

Cognitive Offloading and the Extended Mind

AI Relationships and Attachment
Millions of people now form significant emotional relationships with AI systems — from chatbots (Replika, Character.ai, Snapchat My AI) to voice assistants (Alexa, Siri). These relationships raise fundamental psychological questions about attachment, dependency, and what constitutes genuine human connection.
Replika, an AI companion app with 10M+ users, was designed to provide “an AI that cares.” Users report genuine emotional bonds — some describe their Replika as their closest relationship. When Replika removed its “erotic roleplay” feature in 2023, users experienced what they described as grief and bereavement. The CEO reversed the decision after what users and press described as a mental health crisis among users. AI Bias and Identity
