Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015)
Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999),concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities (hereafter “the Committee”) oversees the sanctions measures imposed by the Security Council.
Measures-
1. Assets Freeze
All states are required to freeze without delay the funds and other financial assets or economic resources of designated individuals and entities.
2. Travel Ban
All states are required to prevent the entry into or transit through their territories by designated individuals
3. Arms Embargo
All states are required to prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale and transfer from their territories or by their nationals outside their territories, or using their flag vessels or aircraft, of arms and related materiel of all types, spare parts, and technical advice, assistance, or training related to military activities, to designated individuals and entities.
The current Chair of the Committee, for the period ending 31 December 2019, is His Excellency Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia).
Why in News?
China blocked for the fourth consecutive time a resolution at the UN Security Council Committee on designating Azhar, head of the JeM terror group, as a global terrorist.China has put a “technical hold” on the resolution.
The proposal to designate Azhar under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council was moved by France, the UK and the US on February 27.
Among non-permanent members, Germany, Poland and Belgium were cosponsors to the 1267 resolution, as were Australia, Bangladesh, Italy and Japan.
Russia, besides the UK, France and the US, were cosponsors among permanent UNSC members.
